Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections
Overuse or damage to the tendon over a long period of time causes the collagen fibers in the tendons to form small tears, a condition called tendinosis. Platelet Rich Plasma, or PRP, is blood plasma with concentrated platelets. The concentrated platelets found in PRP contain growth factors that are vital to initiate and accelerate tissue repair and regeneration. When PRP is injected into the damaged area it stimulates the tendon or ligament causing mild inflammation that triggers the healing cascade. Patients can see improvements in symptoms and function that may eliminate the need for long term medication or surgery – and because we use your own blood to collect the platelets, the procedure is extremely safe.
Tenex Procedure—Minimally-Invasive Ultrasound-guided Tenotomy
For more extensive or chronic tendon problems, Tenex is a great alternative to traditional surgery. Performed in the comfort of our office, the damaged tendon is identified using ultrasound guidance, and the advanced TX MicroTip uses ultrasonic energy to remove the diseased tissue promoting tissue healing and tendon repair. This revolutionary procedure takes less than 20 minutes to complete, requires only a tiny incision, and no stitches are needed.
Prolotherapy is another alternative treatment for musculoskeletal pain that involves injecting an irritant substance (as dextrose) into a ligament or tendon to promote the growth of new tissue. Tendons and ligaments that are damaged and have become weak can be painful when used. Prolotherapy attempts to restore strength and integrity to the weakened area. Like PRP, it is very safe.
FAQ: Answers to your most common questions from the Tendon Clinic experts at McConnell Spine, Sport & Joint Physicians.
What are tendons?
Tendons are structures that connect our muscles to our bones and, as a result, are involved in every movement we make and are located all throughout our body. When our tendons are overworked, we feel a pulled or strained sensation and pain will likely occur during or shortly after activity.
Tendon injuries are some of the most common problems patients face in sports and every day activity. Most injuries resolve on their own with ice, rest and medication. But some—especially injuries that recur or last for several weeks—require special attention and treatment to optimize the healing process. The sooner these problems are correctly diagnosed, the better the results.
Who can benefit from the Tendon Clinic?
Folks at all levels of activity can benefit from the Tendon Clinic. Whether you are experiencing pain in your joints from a tendon injury or are looking to prevent a tendon injury from occurring, the experts at the Tendon Clinic can accurately diagnose the condition and prescribe individualized treatment.
What makes this program so unique?
Not only does the Tendon Clinic provide expert care to its patients, but we also teach our patients ways to prevent injuries from occurring. We are different because we offer non-surgical solutions and state-of-the-art technology to patients at every level of activity—all in one convenient location. From the professional athlete to the weekend warrior, we have a treatment plan that’s right for you.
A lot of people suffer from tendon problems mid-season in their sport. Should athletes wait until the end of their season, or can they come in for an evaluation mid-season? The earlier an athlete receives treatment for tendon injuries—the better. Anyone experiencing pain that impacts performance or function should be seen by one of our experts as soon as they experience tendon or joint pain.
